How to test your grounding cord

Test Your Grounding Product

Two tests, one multimeter, about two minutes. Watch the video, or open the steps below it.

PART 1

Test the cord

Dial on 200 KΩ. You should see

about 100 KΩ

Step by step

1. Set the dial to 200KΩ.

2. Touch one probe to the snap end of the cord.

3. Touch the other probe to the round pin inside the wall plug.

4. Read the number. Around 100KΩ means the cord is good.

Why is the number so high?

Every GAYA cord has a built in 100K Ohm resistor. The high reading is that resistor doing its job. A cord that reads close to zero is the one result to tell us about.

The screen says OL or 1

That means the probes are not making contact yet. Check the dial is on 200KΩ, press the probes down firmly, and make sure the red probe sits in the VΩmA port and the black one in COM.

PART 2

Test the mat or sheet

Dial on 200 Ω. You should see

about 4 Ω per centimeter

Step by step

1. Set the dial to 200Ω.

2. Press both probes onto the conductive surface, about one centimeter apart.

3. Read the number. A low reading means the surface conducts.

4. Move the probes further apart and the number rises. That is normal.

Check the snap connector too

Set the dial to 2KΩ. Put one probe on the metal snap button and the other on the fabric a few inches away. Around 0.5KΩ confirms the snap is connected to the conductive layer.

To check everything at once, snap the cord in, set the dial back to 200KΩ, then put one probe on the plug pin and one on the surface. Around 100KΩ means the full path is working.

The number looks wrong

Press harder so the probe tips reach the conductive fibers, and try a few different spots. On sheets, test the conductive side.

If the reading still will not settle, send us a photo of your multimeter screen and we will tell you what you are looking at.

Then check the outlet

Plug the GAYA outlet tester into the outlet you plan to use. Two amber lights means the ground is connected. Older homes without a ground hole can use the GAYA grounding plug instead.

Once both check out, you are set. Grounding works with no lights, no sound, and no sensation, which is exactly why these tests exist.
